Professor Marci Hamilton will address the issue of the sex abuse of young athletes, which is a nationwide problem that spans multiple sports, coaches, schools, and leagues. She will survey the state of play with respect to the ongoing disputes and will offer insights into better prevention based on the work of CHILD USA.

CHILD USA recently surveyed elite athletes to assess the incidence of abuse and neglect, and Prof. Hamilton will report on those findings. CHILD USA also instituted the Game Over: Commission to Protect Youth Athletes in 2018 to study in-depth the sex abuse scandal involving the abuse of hundreds of gymnasts by Dr. Larry Nassar, and to put together more effective prevention policies for young athletes. The Commission is composed of a distinguished group of experts including NCA's own Executive Director, Teresa Huizar. Prof. Hamilton will discuss the progress of the Commission toward its goal of publishing a White Paper on the prevention of sex abuse of young athletes.

American Indian and Alaska Native children who are victims of child abuse are often served by Child Advocacy Centers in both rural and urban communities. This presentation will explore the historical traumas perpetrated by the child welfare system and the present influences on Indigenous families. Participants will move through the National Children’s Alliance accreditation standards and be provided recommendations and approaches to consider that support the physical and psychological safety of AI/AN children and families accessing services. Further, participants will be asked to explore system-wide and programmatic barriers faced by AI/AN children and families involving accessibility and participation in the CAC process and subsequent case management and treatment services.

• Improve participant understanding about the contemporary influence of historical trauma on AI/AN children and families accessing services offered through state and county operated Child Advocacy Centers;
• Participants will explore approaches to practice across CAC accreditation standards that are culturally responsive to tribal children and families accessing services;
